    Default European Pocky - "Mikado"

    Hello!

p33r found a European version of Pocky today, which appears to be the same product, but rebranded "Mikado", after the game where the objective is to stack small sticks, and produced in a factory near Bordeaux in France.

It struck me immediately that it might be considerably cheaper to import these snacks from Europe (possibly France, though Glico lists several countries where they can be found), rather than importing them all the way from Japan.

I believe p33r argued that it'll be difficult to have a new brand become as successful as Pocky among japanophiles, though perhaps it would be possible to market both brands alongside each other? At any rate, here's Glico's page about Mikado:

Hmm, interesting. I don't really think that the brand name will be a problem, people will see that it's the same product. The only question is, does it taste exactly the same? If the answer to that is "yes", then I don't really see a problem with Micado over Pocky (except for the flavours, I don't expect that Micado will have as many different flavours?).

BTW, do you already sell Pocky there? Any other japanese snacks? Hi-chew? (I'm totally addicted to Hi-chew after I tasted it on my trip to Australia. XD)

Mikado has a more westerner taste to the chocolate than usual pocky, and the sticks are shorter and thinner than the Pocky counterpart. Still, they're just as good as the real thing - think of it as a Freia version, kinda. Atleast how I experienced them when a friend bought a ton of these for me in Spain.

I found those in Spain this December too. I don't really know if they tasted as good as Pocky or not.. I didn't have any Pocky there so I could compare them :0

This alternative is very interesting, would like to try some if they are any different.
But for the meantime I guess we should invest our time to get the Original Pokky's at Neo Tokyo.

I personally think that Pokky's are great but there are many other great tasting goodies in Japan. Like "Umai bou" Direct Translation= Tasty Sticks

We hope that we can share some of them with you soon!

I'm wondering about that last question as well, although "these days" are 6 months ago now
I was thinking about going down to the store now and stock up on Pocky before the weekend, but it's nice to know if there are any there before going...

Probably going to buy this just to taste the difference. If there isn't any, I hope it'll come to Norway.

I have tasted both Pocky and Mikado, and they taste exactly the same to me, that is the normal/original chocolateversion. There are not so many varieties of Mikado though, I think there are only 2 flavours, light and dark chocolate.

That said, I was wondering if you can get hold of Milk&Honey Pocky? I tasted it once, and it's just my cup of tea.

Oh, and for those of you addicted to Pocky. Here is the Pocky shrine: http://www.intothesea.com/PockyShrine/
